Reflexology: What to Expect

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive treatment that is based on the belief that there are zones or meridians throughout the body and specific points in the hands and feet that correspond to each part of the body. It is thought that pressure on certain parts of the feet and hands will release energy points, leading to improved circulation, relieving tension and reducing stress. A fully qualified reflexologist will use specific thumb and finger movements to enhance the body’s natural functions and to encourage wellbeing. Although there are very few instances where it may not be appropriate for a treatment to be given, reflexology is generally suitable for all ages and abilities.

The Treatment

Typically a reflexology treatment will last an hour. The treatment will be given in a comfortable seated position with socks and shoes removed. Your therapist may play soothing music and the lighting may be dimmed. If you are receiving your first treatment then you should be given a consultation, where your therapist will chat to you about any issues and make an full holistic assessment of your general health and feet. Your therapist should make you feel at ease and encourage you to ask questions.

Occasionally certain areas of your feet may feel tender during the treatment, overall the session will feel relaxing and you may feel sleepy or drowsy at the end. The Complimentary & Natural Health Care Council states that a treatment will “help you relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of wellbeing.”
